Ostróżki będące mieszańcami międzygatunkowymi to imponujące byliny, o niepowtarzalnych kwiatach, zaopatrzonych w ostrogę. W zależności od odmiany rośliny osiągają wysokość 70-180 cm. Pędy sztywne, wzniesione, gęsto ulistnione z wierzchołkowymi kwiatostanami, które dorastają nawet do metrowej długości. Wysokie odmiany wymagają podpór, zapobiegających ich pokładaniu, szczególnie po ulewnych deszczach i silnych wiatrach. Pojedyncze, duże kwiaty ostróżki osiągają średnicę nawet do ok. 5 cm, w zależności od odmiany są one białe, zielonkawe, w różnych odcieniach niebieskiego, różowego, fioletowego, mogą być pojedyncze lub pełne, często dwubarwne z innym zabarwieniem oczka. Roślina przycięta po pierwszym przekwitnięciu na wysokości 10-15 cm wypuszcza nowe pędy, które przyniosą jesienią nowe kwiaty. Wszystkie odmiany mieszańcowe wymagają żyznej, głęboko uprawionej, pulchnej gleby, umiarkowanie wilgotnej w sezonie, lecz nie zalewanej podczas zimy. Polecane do sadzenia w grupach na rabatach, przy murach, płotach, w ogrodach naturalistycznych, na stanowiskach słonecznych i półcienistych. Bardzo okazale prezentują się ścięte i umieszczone w wazonie.
